Workshops at NCSS Conference Give K-12 Teachers Latest Lesson Plans for Teaching About Current Economic Events
New York (PRWEB) November 11, 2008 -- The National Council on Economic Education (www.ncee.net) rolled out its list of economics and personal finance workshops for the National Council for the Social Studies (www.ncss.org) Conference on November 14th-16th in Houston, Texas.
During the workshops, social studies teachers will receive handouts and activities they can take back to their classrooms and use with their students immediately. In addition, teachers will discover the latest hands-on teaching strategies and techniques that will help them integrate much-needed economics and personal finance concepts into their curriculum.
"Demand for economic lesson plans has skyrocketed due to the recent economic crisis," notes Troy D. White, NCEE's Director of Product Marketing and Sales. "These workshops give teachers at all grade levels the tools they need to teach about current economic events, both today and in the future."
Focus on Economics and Technology
Using interactive activities and multimedia clips Kathy Miles, NCEE's teacher support specialist for Thinking Economics, will detail how to address and eliminate the common fears of teaching economics. Her session, Interactive Economics: The Future of Social Studies Education, takes place on Friday, November 14th 10:15 am to 11:15 am in room 330A. During the session Mrs. Miles will demonstrate technology-based resources designed to seamlessly infuse economics content into everyday classroom instruction.
Teachers will also have the opportunity to visit Mrs. Miles in the third level lobby for her poster session, Embrace the Future with Interactive Economics, from 5pm to 6pm on Friday, November 14th. Teachers will preview a comprehensive economics curriculum that give students a self-paced and individualized learning experience, while strengthening their computer literacy skills at the same time.
For teachers interested in fine-tuning their search for online lessons, John LeFeber, NCEE Curriculum and Instructional Developer, will demonstrate how EconEdlink.org (www.econedlink.org) can provide economics and personal finance lessons searchable by grade level, concept and content standards in a matter of moments, and at absolutely no cost. Teachers will also discover how they can complement their textbooks with a suite of CD and DVD economics and personal finance programs. Mr. LeFeber's session Economics Sizzles with Technology will take place on Satuday, November 15th at 5:15pm to 6:15pm in room 351.
Focus on Personal Finance and Technology
On Saturday, November 15th, Mrs. Miles will conduct Making the Fourth "R" Relevant: Real World Financial Literacy, from 2:15 to 3:15 pm. She will review a variety of web-based and print resources designed to help teachers introduce personal finance themes like money management, investing, savings and credit into their social studies curriculum.

"CANADA is coming to NCSS"
The National Council on Economic Education has teamed up with the National Resource Center on Canada to provide additional handouts and lesson plans for the Center's session Bigger than Texas: The Canada -U.S. Trade Partnership. The NCEE has included lessons from its Econdedlink.org website and Focus: International Economics publication that highlight NAFTA and its effects on US and Canada trade relations.
The Bigger than Texas: The Canada -U.S. Trade Partnership session will take place on November 15th at 3:45-4:45 pm in room 342A. David McGregor (Consul and Trade Commissioner, Houston Consulate of Canada) and Craig Harding (AB) will lead the session.
